Italy Study Abroad Sketchbook: A compilation of visual notes and analysis of places I visited while studying abroad in Italy. I studied abroad during the spring semester of my Junior year at HWS. I was able to improve my skills in watercolor, line weight, drawing on site, and analyzing the built environment around me.
Charcoal Drawings: During my first year at HWS, I took an intro to drawing course. I was able to improve my drawing skills through the charcoal medium, by looking at light and shadows, shapes, scale, and perspective. At the end of the semester I had two refined drawings.
Urban Street Study: While studying abroad in Italy I chose to do an analysis of two streets in Rome. I loved the streets in Rome and thought they were very unique to the city, so I wanted to explore them more to better understand them. I choose two streets that were both about the same size but were on opposite sides of the Tiber River. I looked at the characteristics of each street; the shops, the piazzas, the apartments and the restaurants. I also took note of how the facades looked and compared them side by side. The analysis led me into better understanding how streets work, what makes a street begin and end and the overall function of an urban street.
